Biniam Ghebremichael

DOJ Accredited Representative

Biniam Ghebremichael joined AAN as a DOJ Accredited Representative in September 2021 and he is working on affirmative asylum, family-based petitions, consular processing, adjustment of status, and naturalization cases.

Biniam received his Bachelor of Laws (LLB), from the University of Asmara in 2001 and his Master of Laws from University of Berkeley, School of Law in 2018 and received three different certificates of specialization including International Law. He was also a member of the International Human Rights Law Clinic at UC Berkley.

Biniam served as a Judge at Civil and Appellate Regional Courts in Eritrea from 2001 to 2008. In 2009, he was assigned to Eritrean Airlines where he served as a Legal Counsel, Director of Administration and Secretary of Board of Directors until November 2014. He also taught law at College of Law in Asmara (part of the Adi Keih College). Biniam is also a Country of Origin Expert and provided expert testimonies on Eritrean Legal Systems for organizations, courts and companies including the U.S Department of State, USCIS, Immigration Court, Canadian Supreme Court, Dutch Refugee Council, and the World Bank.

Biniam volunteered at Center for Gender and Refugee Studies and Center for Justice and Accountability. Before he joined AAN, Biniam worked with different private attorneys in the Bay Area.

Biniam is fluent in Tigrinya and Amharic and conversational in Arabic and French.
